When it came to supporting the community, Ralph Vanhell could teach lessons.
Even after MS left him in a wheelchair and dependent on others to get around, he could still be found at community celebrations in Picture Butte, the harvest day for the local foodgrains crop or enjoying a concert in the park. For years, he attended numerous community events and activities, lending his support by encouraging others and always greeting everyone with a kind word. Each November, he would show up in Lions park, wrapped up tight against the often chilly wind, so he could take in the service at the cenotaph on Remembrance Day. For years, the local theatre group, Butte Players, always made sure its production schedule included a matinee performs so he could attend. His support meant that much to them. The manner in which he approached his illness and still managed to smile, lifting the spirits of those he came in contact with, will serve as a lasting memory of a man whose courage was always evident. He didn’t shy away from the community and the community embraced him. His faith shone through his illness and was also evident in how he lived his life. Picture Butte, as a community, and the people who call it home, where obviously important to him. When all is said and done, he was there, he was always there. The way in which his wife, Annie, cared for him over the years also stands as a testament of true commitment. Anyone who ever wonders how serious someone can take the marriage vows, “in sickness and in health,” need look no further then the two of them. She has demonstrated what real love and commitment is all about and his gratitude was evident in his appreciation for her. She has cared for her husband and been at his side for years, helping to ensure his quality of life carried on even when his own body failed him. There are many life lessons to be learned in this situation. While it is certainly sad that Ralph is no longer with us, he did leave a lasting memory and stands as an awesome example of what a community supporter can be. He was always there and now he will be noticeably absent. He will be missed. |
