The dawn of a new decade is greeted by many with a renewed sense of optimism.
On the economic front, 2009 proved to be a challenge for many maybe more so south of the border than on this side of the line. There were certainly hurdles to overcome in a number of industries, as the financial picture was not as sharp as in previous years.
Already those who tend to look on the bright side are predicting better things ahead in 2010. Of course, for every person who believes the new year looks to be better, there are those who believe things might just get worse before they improve in 2010.
For the sports fan the new year brings a treat as the 2010 Winter Olympics will finally arrive in Vancouver in February. This event has been promoted for well over a year on television, radio and the internet. The Olympic torch relay will be making stops in Coaldale and Coalhurst in less than two weeks, which should serve to increase the excitement in the final run up to the event.
The Winter Olympics always provide a nice break to the cold, snowy months when Canadians can pull on their Canadian and Olympic clothing and gear on their favourite athletes. The World Junior Hockey finals, set for tonight between Canada and the United States, are just a taste of what sports fans can look forward to with the Olympics.
For students, who generally see the first couple months of the new year as a long series of ordinary classroom life, the Olympics offer a bit of a diversion. Hopefully, students in our local schools will be able to take in some of the sporting action as they cheer on our Canadian athletes.
Being that we live in a strong agricultural base, there is once again optimism prices for products we grow in this region will be stronger in 2010. In some cases, there really is no where to go but up.
On the political front, it could be a very interesting year with municipal elections slated for the fall and the Canadian government always one parliamentary vote away from a federal election, or so it would seem was the case all of last year.
For the most part, Canadians appear to be tired of the political environment in this country. Politicians would be wise to walk lightly as we head into a new year and a new decade.
It seems ironic that a decade ago the dawn of the year 2000 brought with it all types of worries, including a fear the change over to a new millennium would crash everyone’s computer and leave people unable to access bank accounts or even turn on their lights.
In the end it was all “much ado about nothing,” and now serves as a light-hearted tale to share as we open up a new decade and finally clear out the Y2K food storage that never saw the light of day.
