Editor, the News; Several years ago, British Columbia sold water to the state of California. The arrangement was never fully made public, but I understand that a large part of the debt was never paid. More recently, the Americans are after our hydro, as well as water from Okanagan Lake. Considering the unstable economic situation across the border, history could repeat itself. There are also some similar financial concerns regarding the proposed pipeline project to transfer oil from Alberta to the U.S.A. More importantly, the operation could have a devastating impact upon the environment. Despite our advanced technology accidents do happen, especially in a project of this magnitude. The constant possibility of sabotage could also have some serious ecological consequences. One would think that those in authority would have learned some valuable lessons regarding the need for caution when dealing with natural resources. Short-term gains could be followed by long-term regrets. Perhaps the logical thing to do would be to make an about-face and scrap the entire project. It also seems that King Herod had some sound advice. Trust nobody. Michael Plul COALDALE |
