EDITOR; Congratulations to the cities of Edmonton and Calgary for an excellent hosting of the 2012 World Junior Hockey Tournament. Volunteers from these two cities and surrounding areas worked diligently throughout the event. Thanks to the strict international rules, we witnessed clean and enjoyable hockey. There were a few unpleasant instances, but they were quickly nipped in the bud. Our Canadian team came in third but they have every reason to be proud of their efforts. The final game in Calgary was a thriller, with Sweden dominating play over the Russians. Due to the brilliant efforts of the Russian goalie, the game remained scoreless after three periods. After 31 years since their last gold, Sweden accomplished their quest in overtime. Fans were outstanding in their support of our Canadian team. Favouring Sweden in the final match, they were over-zealous in booing the Russians, and certainly they got their money’s worth. The unsung heroes throughout the tournament were the hundreds of volunteers who unselfishly gave of their time. What a delight to see how many young people showed up to help. The remarkable efforts of these volunteers will long be applauded throughout the hockey world. MICHAEL PLUL Coaldale |
