Whether it is a donation of time or money, every dollar and every minute can make a difference both locally and half a world away. Students at R.I. Baker Middle School in Coaldale raised over $300 over a lunch hour last week to be donated to the Canadian Red Cross to assist with relief efforts in Haiti. Over the past few weeks the news has been filled with stories about the recovery effort and the destruction that has left the country, already one of the poorest in the world, trying to get back on its feet. The recovery and rebuilding project in Haiti will be decades in the making. The task may seem overwhelming but with most projects it will be completed dollar by dollar, minute by minute by a host of volunteers and relief organizations. Across our region local residents have been donating what they can to help out with the Haiti relief. It is remarkable how generous people will be when there is an overwhelming need, whether its right next door or half a world away. It is also remarkable that the younger generation is making a difference even if it is through something as simple as cupcake sales or penny drives. Every year students in schools across the region participate in a number of fundraising efforts for both local and international projects. Students in the region have purchased mosquito nets, collected food bank donations and even helped raise on going funds for other worthwhile projects. Children who learn the importance of being charitable will ensure the work continues in this vein when they are adults. In North America it’s easy to take for granted the envious position Canadians and Americans have in the world. We live in countries where, for the most part, the basic necessities of life are met and for many the luxury items are also attainable. In other parts of the globe the struggle to meet the basic needs of a family can be overwhelming. The donation of a few dollars in Canada can impact a family living in poverty in another part of the world on a major level. The differences in dollar value and economies means for just a few dollars Canadians can make a real impact in other parts of the world. The same can be said of volunteering for local organizations and community projects. If everyone in a community donated just one hour a month to a good cause there would be more than enough volunteers to keep projects and organizations up and running every year to the benefit of the entire community. |
