For the seventh year in a row the County of Lethbridge is the recipient of a prestigious Canadian award for financial reporting. The award is granted by the Government Financial Officer Association of the United States and Canada for the county’s production of their 2008 annual report. “It shows the accountability of the county,” said Reeve Lorne Hickey of the seventh consecutive year the county has taken the award. “We are honored and delighted to once again win this award for financial reporting. The accounting staff has gone the extra mile to produce this excellent report that conveys transparency and integrity of our financial affairs. Our appreciation and congratulations go to these individuals,” he said. Winning the award, said Hickey, means the county’s financial reporting meets better than acceptable standards. “They’re award winning standards.” Financial reporting is part of the regular operation of the county and Hickey said winning the award should give county residents confidence in how the county handles its finances. “It makes it very clear- everything is open and accountable.” Hickey sees the award as assurance the county is dealing above board with public funds. “You’re showing you’re responsible to the public.” He presented the award on behalf of the Government Financial Officer Association to Doug Burke, Supervisor of computer services; Katie Moss, accounts payable and receivable; Tracy Anderson, comptroller and Laurie McKean, personnel administrator. The annual financial report was judged by impartial Canadian Review Committee members to meet the high standards of the Financial Reporting Program, including demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” designed to clearly communicate the municipality’s financial story and to motivate potential users to read the report.
