A major fundraiser to benefit the North County Recreation Complex is on the calendar for April. It has been almost three decades since the officially ribbon cutting ceremony was held to open the doors on the complex in 1981. The Town of Picture Butte has now undertaken a $1.3 million project to launch the first major upgrade and repair project for the facility in almost 30 years. “We did it before and as a community we can do it again,” said Coun. Wendy Jones of the town’s plan to fundraise to offset the project cost. A committee was struck last year to begin working on fundraising plans. In addition to donations from the community, the town will host a major fundraising event on Saturday, April 10 with doors open at 1 p.m. The afternoon will be focused on activities for the whole family with children’s games, a silent auction, concession and hourly 50/50 draws. There will also be a digital display of the recreation complex’s three decades of activity. Planning is also underway for entertainment throughout the afternoon. At 6 p.m. the activities shift to the adults with a dinner, dance and beer garden. The $50 a ticket prime rib dinner will also include speeches, a celebration and power point presentation leading into a dance with entertainment by Alter Ego. Once again there will be a live auction, hourly 50/50 draws and t-shirt sales. The dance will run until midnight and tickets for the dinner and dance will be available this week at the town office and local businesses. The recreation committee will also be launching a truck raffle this spring with plans to draw for the new vehicle at Midnight Madness in November. The town has been able to tap into some reserve funding including over $130,000 left over from a major anonymous donor when the complex was originally built. The town expects to use just over $164,000 from reserves along with over $140,000 in grant funding. To date the town has also received over $30,000 in donations including $10,000 each from Porcupine Corral Cleaning and the Picture Butte Lions Club. Phil and Traci Mack, who own the Picture Butte Pharmacy have also donated $5,000, just under $5,000 was generated by the last two Christmas hockey tournament fundraiser and Don and Linda Becklund have donated $1,000. The town also has grant funding to the tune of over $350,000 approved and on the books leaving close to $500,000 still required for the project to be completed and paid for without the town having to dip into other reserve funds or borrow the money. Anyone who would be willing to volunteer for the fundraising event or who would like to donate to the project can contact Jones at 403-732-4090. |
