The County of Lethbridge is still keeping a close eye on winter weather forecasts as it manages its road clearing budget. A mild start to the 2009-2010 winter helped the county offset some of the major snow removal costs of last winter. In the face of last year’s snow removal costs, county council approved a $100,000 snowfall reserve as part of the 2010 budget. The snowfall reserve is now a part of the annual budgeting process. Based on what happened last year from December to February, County Manager Dennis Shigematsu said there was a need to establish a reserve fund just to address heavy snowfall years. “Last winter was the worst I’ve seen,” he said. In addition to some heavy snowfall, the county road crew also had to deal with major drifting with some roads blocked by several feet of blowing snow. On another road front the county undertook a mini-road reconditioning project last year with 25 miles brought up to a reconditioned level which should last three to 12 years depending on the level of traffic. The reconditioning allows the county to extend the life of some roadways in the region without having to undertake major rebuilding. The county spent close to $400,000 on the reconditioning project with grant funding covering all put the $4,000 a miles for re-graveling. The county already has grant approval for another $800,000 for the project over the next two years with 40-50 miles to be covered. Again the county will cover the graveling costs. |
