Picture Butte RCMP responded to over 500 calls for service in the community in 2009.
In a recent report to town council Cpl. Bryan Mucha said traffic still stands out as the local issue of concern for both the municipality and the police.
He said addressing this concern will be part of the policing plan for 2010. He noted Highway Avenue, Crescent Avenue, Rogers Avenue and 7th Street North have all reported problems with speeding vehicles.
“We’ve been trying to get our members into those areas.”
In all the local RCMP answered 576 calls for service in Picture Butte last year. Mucha said over 100 of those were traffic related and self-generated by the officers on duty.
He said the local detachment doesn’t get a lot of criminal code calls such as violence against persons and those they do respond to appear to be isolated incidents involving people who know each other. In 2009 there were six charges laid in this area.
Over the past year there were 52 crimes against property with 10 charges laid. Mucha said a lot of these crimes tend to be mischief.
“We’re trying to get into the schools,” he said in an effort to stay in contact with the youth in the community and encourage them to report vandalism and other acts of mischief to their parents.
“Those kids know what’s going on, they hear everything.”
He said overall complaints are up and the number of tickets being written are also on the rise. He is currently working on priorities for 2010 and said traffic tops the list with involvement in the schools and with youth in the community also making the cut.
He said he is also looking for input from town council on any areas of policing it feels need to be addressed in the coming year.
