As follows are the minor hockey reports submitted to the News over the past week.
INITIATION: The Picture Butte Mighty Knights came out on the winning end in Warner over the weekend. Ethan Slomp, Brody Braun and Jake Roggensack played strong in net. Braun got the shutout in the second period. Aaron Molenaar got two goals and two assists. Caden Heins was good for three. Keelyn Currie and Jake Roggensack both got two goals. Roggensack also got an assist. Tyler Maslen and Brody Braun added one each to the score. The final score was 11-7.
The Coaldale Cobras traveled to Medicine Hat this weekend to participate in the Initiation/Timbit tournament. The first faced off against Chestermere Black Saturday morning. It was a tough game and Coaldale fought hard. Colten Broderson, Declan Irwin and Blake Harris scored a goal each but Chestermere came out on top. The Cobras’ second game was against Airdrie Firebolts. Broderson and Braeden Sheppard each scored a pair of goals. In the third and final game for the Cobras they played the Medicine Hat Oilmen Flames. Broderson and Sheppard both scored in the first period but the Flames tied it up. Jed Magarrell and Nolan Klassen got a goal each with assists by Brady Hoffman and Sheppard in the second. The Flames kept fighting. In the third Broderson, Sheppard, and John Vanden Elzen with a assist from Rylen Stringer each scored putting the Cobras up by two. The Cobras triumphed over the Flames with a final score of 7-5.
NOVICE: After coming off a win on Tuesday, in the first game of their first round playoff series with Cardston, the Picture Butte Novice Elk Broncos lost their second game on Saturday in the opponent’s barn. Jessie Heins played in goal for both games and was solid. On Tuesday Kalem Haney, and Carter Wobick chipped in a pair of goals while Luke Loman added a single. Jordan Groenenboom and Donavan McDowell added assists in the 5-4 win. Great team play by the second line of Anthony Mack, Scott Oosterbroek and Sebastian Liska contributed to the victory. On defense Brayson Thompson and Victor Sagoan helped anchor the blue line. Nathan Magyar and Easton Heins contributed as well with good forechecking.
Saturday’s game ended in a tough sudden death overtime loss. Haney notched four goals while Loman added a single.  Oosterbroek chipped in an assist, in the exiting playoff series. Following the game the coaching staff of the Elk Broncos commented on how much everyone improved their play during the 2009-2010 season and if they continue to work hard they will only get better year after year.
This weekend, the Coaldale Cobra Novice 1 team played their last playoff game against the Foremost Flyers. Our goalie for this game was Skylar Vaselenak. Cobras four goals came from Chance Gorda, Aiden McDonald, Easton Magarrell and Ethan Carroll. D.J. Tonin provided two assists and Derrien Tonin provided one. Despite being ahead by two points in third period, the Flyers came back and won the game 6-4.
The Coaldale Cobra Novice “G” team and the Crowsnest Pass Thunder faced one another in league playoff. The Cobras came out in both matches with great drive and were determined to win, but fell short of advancing by one overtime goal.
The Saturday game was out in the Pass, and points were awarded to Ridly Greig with four goals and three assists, Ragan Roth with a pair of goals, Declan Mullin with one goal and one assist and Aidan Robertson with one goal . Final score was 10-8 for the Crowsnest Pass. Sunday’s battle was here in Coaldale, and the final score was 9-8 in favor of Coaldale. Finding the back of the net was Greig with four goals and three assists, Mullin with a pair of goals, Aidan Robertson and Roth both with one goal and one assist, Kya McNeill with one goal and Owen Gallagher with one assist. Zakary Hetesy played two great games as net minder.
ATOM: The Picture Butte Masterfeed Atom Cobras came out on top of their first round of playoffs against Coaldale 2. The first game played on Thursday night ended with a win of 11-8. Game two played on Sunday gave Picture Butte their second win with a score of 7-6. Combined points in the game included Landon Veluw with nine goals, Jared McCloud and Jackson Liska each added three goals, while singles came from Kolten Heins, Kaiden Middleton and Reed Graham. Contributing assists included Veluw and Graham with a pair and singles from McCloud, Liska, Colin Jorgensen, Kevin Witdouck, Noah Braun, Tyson Penrod, Kyle Davies and C.J. Currie. Austin Maslen played some outstanding goal keeping that helped the team move to the next round.
The Coaldale Cobra Atom “Venom” team had their first league play-off game on Friday night. Visiting in this game was the Lomond Stars. Finding the back of the net was Brock Palmer with six goals and four assists, Trey Brandt with a hat trick and three assists, Jared Robertson with a pair of goals and one assist, Sean Tersteeg with one goal and assist, and Daylen Parker with a single goal. Points were also awarded to Scott Tersteeg with two assists, Kyle Rickert, Ethan Wiebe and Torrin Vaselenak all with one assist. Dylan Mostyn helped the team gain this victory as net minder.
PEEWEE: Bert’s AG Foods Peewee Hawks advanced to the next round of the playoffs. The Hawks played on Thursday and won 3-0. They played the second of a home and home in Lethbridge on Sunday. The Hawks won 4-2. It was a complete team effort from goaltending out.
MIDGET: The Witdouck Farms Midget Mavericks hosted Lethbridge in the first game of the playoffs this past Sunday. They finished with an 8-5 win. Scoring hat tricks for the Mavericks were James Smith and Dustin Gillies. With singles coming from Nick Sushelnitski and Braden Shumaker. Assists went to Brandon Witdouck with three, Braeden DeBoer and Gillies with two each and Smith, Shawn Graham and Riley Vavra -Peacock with one apiece. The second game of the two-game total goal system goes on Tuesday night in Lethbridge.
