Picture Butte’s Steffi Tran has a once-in-a-lifetime memory thanks to an ATCO Gas competition which sent Alberta students to the Olympics for a day.
The St. Catherine’s Grade 8 student was one of over 160 students who made the trip during the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver last month.
“I was really shocked,” she said when she learned from her parents that she had been selected as one of the winners in the ATCO Gas essay competition.
Her cousin Amy came along as her parents were busy with their restaurant in Picture Butte. Tran, who wrote about leadership and her success in academics, said it took awhile for it to sink in that she was actually going to the Olympics.
While spending the day on the coast she was able to see the men’s hockey game between the U.S. and the Swiss and the medal ceremony for the men’s snowboard cross. She also got to see many of the sites around Vancouver set up for the Olympics.
“It was really amazing.”
She was also presented with a number of souvenirs including Olympic mittens, scarves, a jersey and a blanket for the trip home.
Tran said it was amazing to see everyone dressed in Canadian apparel and the festive atmosphere in the streets.
The students were even filmed by CTV and got to eat lunch at the Alberta house.
Another St. Catherine’s student, Kathryn Marien in Grade 9 also came out on the winning end of the ATCO gas competition. She was recently awarded with a laptop computer.
“I thought it was pretty cool.”
She was surprised to find out she’d won for her essay about the sports she is involved in and what it means to be a team leader.
The laptop features the Olympic rings on front of the computer.
