Picture Butte’s Lynden Nummi may not remember his first day of school in 1999 but he is sure to remember this year’s first day.
As a senior at the Picture Butte High School, Nummi has been looking forward most to returning to the sports he loves, volleyball, basketball and golf. In 1999, he was featured in a photo spread in the Sunny South News as he prepared to start Grade 1 at Dorothy Dalgliesh Elementary School. “Not at all,” he said when asked if he remembers having his picture taken for the newspaper. A collection of photographs now serves as a reminder of that day but he doesn’t recall how he felt about his first day of school. “I was probably pretty nervous.” While he isn’t nervous about starting his senior year he admits he is looking forward more to the social aspect of being back in school this fall than in the actual school work. “For my mom, it’s me getting it done.” “I’m glad it’s Grade 12.” He said it’s suppose to be the best year of high school but he admits he is not looking forward to the responsibility that will come after graduation. He is however looking forward to getting back on the court for both basketball and volleyball. He has already made the high school golf team along with younger brother Ryan who is in Grade 10 this year. It is a repeat of the same situation the Nummi boys found themselves in two years ago when Lynden made the team in Grade 10 and so did older brother Gavin when he was in Grade 12. Over the weekend the realization that he was headed back to school Monday started to sink in, probably in the same way it was sinking in for students all over the country. He has been working for the summer putting in a pipeline near Brooks. “I now understand the importance of an education.” He said working at a summer job that required a great deal of physical labour gave him a “case of the real world” and emphasized the importance of staying in school and completing his high school and post secondary studies. This fall he is enrolled in Chemistry, Math, English and Physical Education. |
