INITIATION: Coaldale Initiation No. 1 Cobras lost 8-7 to the Taber Oilers this past weekend. Scoring for the Cobras were Riley Preachuk with three, Brady Magarrell with two, and singles to Tyler Wiebe and Kevin Erick. The Picture Butte Mighty Knights dusted off their skates after a long Christmas break and played two strong games last weekend. Friday night the Mighty Knights hosted Coaldale but came up just short of a win with a score of 8-5. Karsen Haney opened the scoring up with a goal early in the first period. The next three goals for the Mighty Knights were scored by Jaxon Nault. Ryan Holm capped off the scoring with one final goal. On Saturday morning the Knights traveled all the way to Vulcan to face the Hawks. This was a high scoring game for the Might Knights. Cameron Hillaby and Treven Stroeve both celebrated their first career hat tricks while Nault, Haney, Holm, and Zaedyn Postma all contributed a respectable three goals each. Matt Reiter added two more goals to the tally and Riley Hillaby added one more goal. Evan McLeod made his debut in goal and only let one puck sneak by him. Haney and Holm also had a great morning in net. Olivia Oosterbroek was awarded the super sport award for her super effort in the game against the Hawks. NOVICE: Coaldale Novice No. 1 Cobras played a very exciting game against Lethbridge Hornets this past weekend. Though the Cobras lost 7-6, goaltender Ty Young played a strong game. Leading the Cobras offensively was Brandon Granson, with a goal and three assists. Dylan Granson scored twice, Blake Harris had a goal and two assists, Jed Magarrell and John VandenElzen each scored a goal, and Declan Irwin got an assist. ATOM: The Picture Butte Masterfeed Cobras hosted the Irvine Bulldogs in a barn burner of a game at the Lomond Arena this past Saturday. The Bulldogs were first on the scoreboard with a goal in the first minute. The Cobras replied with a couple of goals to put them ahead until a two minute blitzkrieg by the Bulldogs which had the visitors up by 5-2. The Cobras recovered well however and replied with two quick goals of their own to end the first period at 5-4 in favor of the bulldogs. Both teams scored five goals in the second period setting up an exciting third period. First honors in the third went to the Cobras to put them on equal terms, only to be outdone by the Bulldogs who extended their lead to two goals once again. The Cobras still had some bite left however and worked hard to put another three points on the board while keeping the Bulldogs at bay. Final score: Cobras 13 - Bulldogs 12. Well done boys. Kalem Haney was on fire with nine goals, with Luke Loman scoring a hat trick of goals and Jordan Groeneboom scoring a single. Assists were by Anthony Mack, Mike Grant, Carter Wobick, Sven Lammerding and Luke Loman. The Cobras traveled to Standoff on Sunday morning to play Kainai. The Cobras proved too strong for their opponents and beat them by 17-2. Goal scorers were Haney with five, Loman with four, Groenenboom with three, Grant and Mack with two goals each and a single by Scott Oosterbroek. Assists were by Donovan McDowell and Wobick with two each and Loman, Grant and Mack with one assist each. The Coaldale Cobras Atom A team had only one league game this weekend in the Crowsnest Pass. The CNP Thunder started strong and were up 2-1 at the end of the first until the Cobras picked it up and pulled off a 9-5 win. Derrien Tonin headed up the scoreboard with five goals while Hunter Gudmundson added a pair. Nolan Price notched a single goal, one assist and defenceman Haysyn Ostrup pitted a single. Assists came from Easton Magarell and DJ Tonin and Zakary Hetesy was the net minder. The Coaldale Atom 2 Cobras played a pair of home games this past weekend, an exhibition match against the Lethbridge Blades Saturday morning and a Spud League contest Sunday morning versus the Irvine Bulldogs. Unfortunately both games resulted in losses, but there were several bright moments and promising trends. Aidan Robertson, ever dangerous, stepped up offensively, scoring early on in the first period of Saturday’s contest on a crisp breakout passing play from Ragan Roth and Chance Gorda and still in the first, Robertson tallied again, this time unassisted. But those were the only successful offensive forays that the Atom 2 Cobras would convert into goals. The rest of the game the Cobras found themselves mostly hemmed in their own zone trying to turn back the relentless Lethbridge attack. Blake Vaselenak in the Cobra net faced a ton of shots but turned away most. Kaeden Hatfield-Stanley who showed a lot of heart and determination on defence was awarded the Hardest Worker Helmet for his stellar effort in this game. In Sunday’s game at the ‘Snake-Pit’ against the Irvine Bulldogs the Atom 2 Cobras came out skating briskly and working hard on the forecheck, and consequently were more successful in finding the back of the net and stayed even with the talented Bulldogs for two periods. Robertson again provided offensive leadership in this game scoring two goals, with single markers coming from Gabe Neufeld, Hatfield-Stanley and Jed Magarrell, called up from Novice. Assists on these goals came on great passes from Aden McDonald, Neufeld, and Kaden Roy, also called up from Novice. All three eager Novice-age skaters, Braden Sheppard, Roy and Magarrell, performed very well in Atom Cobra jerseys. In the third period the Cobras came out unexpectedly flat and mysteriously listless and allowed a flurry of Irvine goals to squelch any hopes of a Cobra victory before finding their legs again and creating some great scoring chances. Vaselenak was sensational in the Cobra net bravely facing a bunch of blistering shots from a pair of Bulldog centremen who can really fire the puck. Vaselenak flashed his quick glove hand a number of times denying sure goals on several Bulldog rushes and was awarded the Hardest Worker Helmet for his stalwart courage and resolute spirit between the pipes. PEEWEE: The Picture Butte Wilbur Ellis Peewee Hawks played two league games this past weekend. On Saturday, we hosted the Pincher Creek Chinooks and took an 11-6 loss. Landon Veluw led the scoring with four goals while C.J. Currie and Kevin Witdouck each chipped in one. Alex Grassl, Witdouck and Ethan Stubbs all had assists. Reed Graham was the netminder in the loss. On Sunday, the Crowsnest Pass Thunder came to play and we managed to hold them to a 3-3 tie. What an improvement from the last time we met. Currie found the back of the net twice and Veluw added one. Assists came from Veluw, Currie, Stubbs, Witdouck and Jackson Liska. Austin Maslen played an outstanding game in net. |
