As follows are the minor hockey reports submitted to the News over the past week.
INITIATION: The Picture Butte Mighty Knights were back in action this weekend with two games on the calendar. On Saturday afternoon they faced the Warner South County Sabres in Picture Butte before a near capacity crowd. Matt Reiter lit up the score board first and added two more goals later in the game and also had an assist early in the first period. Ryan Holm also added a goal in the first period and briskly added two more in the second. Jaxon Nault added two exciting goals. Kourtney Serfas scored her goal in the first period and then worked on a big assist for little brother Rhett, who was all smiles when he added his goal in the second period. Cameron Hillaby showed perseverance as he scored two goals in the third period both assisted by Holm. Karsen Haney put in a solid performance in net stopping most shots that came his way. The Mighty Knights celebrated a victory against the Sabres with a score of 12-5. On Sunday morning the Mighty Knights braved the Lethbridge Jr. hurricane Storm Troopers and although they came out skating briskly and played a strong game they were not victorious this time around with a final score of 15-9. Holm and Zaedyn Postma both found the back of the net three times while Kourtney Serfas added two more and Nault added a single. Hillaby in the Mighty Knights net faced a ton of shots but turned away most. The Mighty Knights are eagerly anticipating traveling to Taber this weekend to face three different teams in the Taber tournament. NOVICE: Coaldale Novice No. 1 Cobras played two games this past weekend, going 1-1 in a pair of road games. The Cobras defeated Pincher Creek on Saturday. Dylan Granson lead the way with four goals, three assists. Brandon Granson added two goals, four assists; Jed Magarrell potted a goal, three assists; Colton Broderson scored three times; Blake Harris had a goal, two assists; Declan Irwin and John VandenElzen each scored two goals and Haelen Opp and Jaedyn Habke each got an assist in the win. Sunday saw Coach Adam Magarrell’s Cobras lose a close game 10-9 to the Taber Icehogs. VandenElzen scored three times and added an assist, Broderson and Granson each scored two goals and assisted on one, Irwin had a goal and an assist, Magarrell scored once, and Habke added an assist. Ty Young played goal for the Cobras in both games. The Novice Elks Broncos had two games this weekend and although they played hard they came up short on both.vFriday night they hosted the Taber No.1 team. It was a close game through the first two periods ending the second with a 6-6 tie but Taber came on strong in the 3rd for the win. Picture Butte goals where scored by Tyson Van Zeggelaar with one, Caden Heins with two, Sebastian Liska with three and Riley McCloud and Aaron Molenaar each with one. Easton Heins had two assists. Jake Roggensack stopped many shots between the pipes. Saturdays game was played in Taber against the Taber Warriors. Brody Braun worked hard in net but we came up short. Goals where scored by Tyler Maslen, Caden Heins and Liska each with two. Hunter Van Vaerenbergh and Caden Heins each made an assist. ATOM: The Picture Butte Masterfeeds Atom Cobras traveled to Pincher Creek to face the A Division Chinooks in an exhibition game on Saturday. The Cobras played well and were down a single goal at the end of the first period at 4-3, but were unable to match the Chinooks when they shifted up a gear in the second and third periods. The Chinooks took the game with a score of 14-6. The Cobras played the Kainai Chiefs on home ice on Sunday morning. The Chiefs had some exciting periods of play but the Cobras with Donovan McDowell in goal, were able to claim their first shut-out of the season. The Cobras took the honors with a final score of 15-0. Kalem Haney and Mike Grant both scored a hat trick of goals, with Sven Lammerding, Luke Loman, Scott Oosterbroek and Jordan Groenenboom scoring two goals each, and Anthony Mack contributing a single. Assists were by Groenenboom with four, Oosterbroek with three, Grant, Haney and Mack with two each as well as Kira Lescieux with a single. The Coaldale Cobras Atom A team had a great showing in the Elk Valley Wild Atoms Tournament in Sparwood this weekend. The tournament had eight teams from Sparwood, Fernie, Cochrane, Taber, Lethbridge, Cranbrook and Elk Valley. The Cobras had a flurry of five games within a 28-hour period. It all started Saturday morning against the hosting Sparwood team. The game held tight as it was tied at the end of the second. Coaldale then pulled away with four unanswered goals and skated away with a 6-2 win. The Cobras were led by three goals from Derrien Tonin while Haysyn Ostrup, DJ Tonin and Hunter Gudmundson adding singles. Brooklyn Palmer notched two assists and Gudmundsun earned the Player of the Game. Next the Cobras faced the Fernie Jr. Ghostriders and put their skills to a test. Lighting up the scoreboard were Nolan Price with a hat trick; DJ Tonin a single goal, two assists; Ostrup and Derrien Tonin each added singles with Easton Magarrell chipping in an assist. Zakary Hetesy turned away 20 shots on net for the 6-4 win. Price earned the Player of the Game. Third game of the day Coaldale came across the Lethbridge Storm. The Storm scored one in the first but the Cobras breezed through to a 11-1 triumph. Racking up the points were Derrien Tonin with five goals; DJ Tonin adding a pair of goals, one assist; Magarrell one goal, two assists; Gudmundson and Ostrup each with one goal, one assist; while Price edged a single goal. Tyson Mostyn, Zach Young and Sean Tersteeg each contributed a single assist. Player of the Game went to goaltender Zakary Hetesy. Saturdays games resulted in a second place finish earning a berth to the semi-finals. The Cobras again faced the Fernie Ghostriders in a semi-final game. This was an exciting nail-biting end to end game as the Cobras tied it up in the third. This ended when Derrien Tonin popped one in, resulting in a 5-4 victory. Point getters were Derrien Tonin with a total of two; Ethan Carroll and Gudmundson each with one and one; Dylan Lang adding a single goal and Palmer pitted an assist. |
