As follows are the hockey reports submitted to the News over the past week.
INITIATION: The Coaldale Initiation No.1 Cobras had a successful weekend, going 3-0 in an Initiation tournament in Taber. Coach John Wegenast’s Cobras had wins over Okotoks, Picture Butte and the Lethbridge Timbits Red Wings. Player of the Game nods went to Tyler Wiebe, Kade Lyckman and Katie Gallagher. Scoring over the weekend were Riley Preachuk with nine goals, Paul VandenElzen with six goals, Brady Magarrell with five goals, Kade Lyckman with four goals, Dawson Bangma with four goals, Bowman Klippenstein with three goals and singles from Carter Opp, Tyler Wiebe, Katie Gallagher and Tanner Bangma. Special congratulations for Gallagher's first Initiation goal ever. NOVICE: The Coaldale Novice No.1 Cobras had a good weekend, beating the Coaldale Novice No.2 Cobras 12-6 in Spud League Novice action. Nolan Klassen got the victory in net, with Declan Irwin leading the way on the score sheet with four goals and one assist. Also getting points in the game were Dylan Granson with three goals and two assists, Jed Magarrell with two goals, Colton Broderson and John VandenElzen each with a goal and an assist, Brandon Granson with two assists, Ty Young with a goal and Shaelynn Nelson with an assist. The Picture Butte Novice Elks Broncos traveled to Vauxhall on Sunday for an exhibition bout with the Sabres. It was a hard fought battle that saw the Broncos on the losing end of a 13 to 7 game. Standing tall in net was Ethan Slomp and goals for the Broncos were scored by Sebastian Liska with four, Caden Heins with two and Aaron Molenaar with one. Assists came from Heins with with three, Riley McCloud with two and Molenaar and Austin Hengerer each with one. Good job team. ATOM: The Picture Butte Masterfeeds Atom Cobras hosted seven teams from Southern Alberta in their Atom Tourney this past weekend, namely the Ice Hawks and Hornets from Medicine Hat, the Monarchs and Rockets from Lethbridge, the Calgary Trails West Wolves and the Coaldale Cobras as well as the Vulcan Hawks. The home team bounced back from a disappointing effort on Friday night and were able to secure a place in the B-Division final on Sunday against the Medicine Hat Hornets. The Cobras played well and shut out the Hornets with a scoreline of 6-0 to take the title. Go Cobras. The Coaldale Cobras Atom A team had a pair of games this weekend. Friday night at the Snakepit the Cobras challenged the Raymond Ice No.1 team in league play. The Cobras came out strong and beat the Ice 6-1. Tallying points were Hunter Gudmundson with a pair of goals, one assist; Derrien Tonin adding two goals; Ethan Carroll with a single goal and one assist. Dylan Lang chipped in two assists while Tyson Mostyn contibuted a single. Zakary Hetesy was the netminder for the game. Saturday the Cobras played the visiting Claresholm team for exhibition play. The Cobras gave it a great effort but were defeated 4-7. Scoring for Coaldale were Nolan Price, Haysyn Ostrup, Derrien Tonin and Gudmundson each with a single goal. Assists came from DJ Tonin and Lang while Hetesy was in net. After a layoff of almost two weeks, The Coaldale Atom 2 Cobras played four road games within a gruelling schedule this past weekend, combining play in the Picture Butte Atom Tournament with a Spud League game against the Kainai Chiefs in Standoff. The late Friday evening’s first tournament game on ’Butte ice versus the Medicine Hat Ice Hawks was an experience of our Cobras trying to shake off the “rust” from the last two weeks and get into the game against what quickly proved to be a speedy, highly skilled Hat team. By the second period the Cobras, were finding their skating legs, trying hard to withstand the stifling Ice Hawks pressure offence, and struggling valiantly to break out and create offensive rushes of their own, but all attempts were quickly choked off and much of the play in the game remained behind the Cobra blue line. Our Cobras were shut out on the score sheet in this contest. Blake Vaselenak, stalwart and brave in the Cobra net, faced and turned away a ton of shots, while reluctantly surrendering rebound goals and blistering high shots. Vaselenak was the obvious choice for the “Digger Award” following the game. Saturday morning’s Spud League game against the Kainai Chiefs in Standoff can best be summarized as “a hard fought battle that resulted in a win”. In a tough physical game, our Atom 2 Cobras battled back from a two goal deficit, maintained their composure, and worked hard as a team to gain a 6-5 victory. Aidan Robertson led the offensive charge with a hat trick of goals and assisted on another. Gabe Neufeld notched a pair of goals and Aiden McDonald contributed a goal and an assist as well. Assists on these goals also came from the strong support of Kya McNeill with two helpers and Haylee Pierson with one. McDonald was awarded the “Hard Hat Award” for a rugged performance both offensively and defensively. Back in tournament play in Picture Butte Saturday evening our Coaldale Atom 2 Cobras took on the other Medicine Hat entry, the Hat Hornets, and were more successful in generating offensive rushes, but still came up short of a win. Robertson, ever shifty and quick up center ice, led Cobra scoring again with a hat trick, followed by the speedy and determined McDonald with a pair of goals. Ethan Waldie and Neufeld tallied assists on these goals. Defenseman Kaeden Hatfield-Stanley was named the “Digger of the Game” for his tireless effort to break up Hornet offensive thrusts and to move the puck up ice for Cobra attacks. Early Sunday morning our Atom 2 Cobras played hard in taking on the Vulcan Hawks in their final game of the Picture Butte tournament, but again were unsuccessful in earning a victory in this tournament. Scoring for the Cobras was limited to two goals, with Robertson recording one goal and assisting on another from McDonald. McNeill provided passes that assisted on both of these goals. Vaselenak was as sharp and steady as ever between the pipes for the Cobras and some of the best memories in this game are of Vaselenak’s lightning-quick blocker saves that denied what looked to be sure goals. |
