Lethbridge County issues Fire Restriction as lack of moisture and hot, dry conditions increase wildfire risk  Lethbridge County

Effective Tues., Sept. 23, a Fire Restriction is in place for Lethbridge County. 

Hot, dry conditions and a lack of recent moisture have significantly increased wildfire risk across the region.

All active fire and fireworks permits are now cancelled, and no new permits will be issued.

Prohibited under the Fire Restriction:

• Controlled burns requiring a fire permit (e.g. burn pits, yard waste, large debris)
• Fireworks

Allowed:
(Must meet the specifications in the County’s Fire Bylaw)

• Recreational campfires in approved fire pits
• Burn barrels and incinerators with spark arrestors
• Charcoal briquette barbecues and wood pellet grills
• CSA/ULC-approved gas or propane stoves, heaters, and firepits

The County regularly monitors local weather conditions, vegetation levels and forecasts to make informed decisions about fire restrictions. These measures are put in place to protect people, property and the land.

With harvest season in full swing and increased activity in the fields, fire risk naturally rises this time of year. We appreciate the ongoing vigilance of our ag community and are sharing a few prevention tips that can help reduce the risk even further during this period:

• Clean out equipment regularly to remove debris that can overheat and ignite. Leaf blowers are a helpful tool.
• Schedule breaks to allow machinery to cool. Overheated parts, like bearings are a common ignition source.
• Equip each piece of equipment with a fire extinguisher and keep a water truck nearby.
• Connect with neighbours to coordinate emergency responses and share contact info.
