With winter weather on the horizon and temperatures beginning to drop, the Town of Coaldale and Family and Community Support Services (FCSS) are preparing for the inevitable — snow. With that comes the return of Coaldale’s Snow Angels program, which helps residents who need extra support maintaining safe walkways through the winter months.
A Snow Angel is a volunteer who helps clear the sidewalk and/or driveway of snow and ice for someone who is unable to do so themselves,” said Zakk Morrison, Executive Director of Barons–Eureka–Warner FCSS. “This small act of kindness can make an enormous difference for someone who may otherwise struggle to safely enter or exit their home during the winter season.”
Participation in the Snow Angels program is simple. Residents who need help clearing snow at their property—due to age, disability, or temporary physical limitations—can apply to FCSS for assistance. Once approved, a Snow Angels sign is placed outside their home from November until mid-April. Whenever it snows, community members who spot the sign are encouraged to grab a shovel and help clear the walkways or driveway.
Volunteers may include individuals, families, youth groups, seniors, community organizations, or local businesses. Snow Angels recipients are encouraged to leave a shovel accessible to ensure volunteers can assist quickly and safely.
“The Snow Angels program is one of the simplest and most meaningful ways to support neighbours in need,” said Town of Coaldale Mayor, Jack Van Rijn. “A few minutes of shovelling can have a huge impact on someone’s safety, independence, and peace of mind. Coaldale is a community that truly looks out for one another, and programs like this reflect the kindness and connection we’re known for. We’re grateful to FCSS for bringing this program forward and to every volunteer who steps up to lend a hand.
To recognize the efforts of local Snow Angels, volunteers are invited to submit their volunteer hours online each month for a chance to win a small appreciation prize. Residents who receive assistance may also nominate a volunteer for a gift of thanks.
The Snow Angels program is available to residents within the Town of Coaldale.
