Noise levels along Highway 3 are causing concern for some Coalhurst residents.

The matter was recently brought to council’s attention and Town of Coalhurst councillors discussed a noise reduction inquiry along Highway 3 at the Dec. 9, 2025 regular council meeting. The inquiry came after a Coalhurst resident contacted council members about transport trucks use of engine brakes as they drive past the town.

Numerous local trucks and long-haul freight transportation are known to use this corridor as a primary route. With exits situated at the Kipp intersection, the town intersection and the west Lethbridge exit, the use of engine brakes often results in unnecessary increased noise levels.

The inquiry was brought forward to determine if the town could limit or prohibit the noise on Highway 3 and provide information on options the town may have to address the matter and what steps can be taken to remedy the situation.

“We had a resident reach out to a few council members so we’re just inquiring to see if it’s possible to have noise reduction signage, some sort of verbage along Highway 3, indicating engine brakes for trucks,” said Coun. Brody Prete. “I think what’s happening is the pull-out along Highway 3, right along the back end of Sundance, as trucks are pulling in there to stop at night – those engine breaks can be very loud.”

“I know residents that I’ve talked to are very aware – highway noise is part of it, train noise is part of it so this is just one thing,” he added, pointing to other municipalities that have signs indicating residential areas where engine breaks are not to be used and are prohibited is such areas.

Town of Coalhurst administration said they would reach out to the appropriate authority with the request for signage and report back to council.
