Blood Tribe opens state-of-the-art Twin Rinks facility, creating a new hub for community, sport, and economic growth

Blood Tribe is proud to announce the opening of the Blood Tribe Twin Rinks, a new 86,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art recreational facility that will serve as a cornerstone for community wellness, youth development, sport, and economic activity for generations to come.

Constructed at a cost of $37.3 million, the Twin Rinks facility features two NHL-sized ice surfaces, making it one of the premier recreation facilities in southern Alberta. The game rink includes seating for 750 spectators plus 10 accessible seats, while the practice rink accommodates 200 spectators, providing the capacity to host local programs, regional tournaments, leagues, camps, and community events throughout the year.

More than an arena, the Twin Rinks represents the Blood Tribe’s continued commitment to investing in infrastructure that enhances quality of life, supports healthy communities, and creates opportunities for future generations.

“Kainai has consistently demonstrated leadership in building infrastructure that supports the wellbeing and success of our people,” said Chief Travis Plaited Hair. “The Twin Rinks is an investment in our youth, our families, and our future. It creates a welcoming space where our community can come together, be active, develop skills, build relationships, and celebrate achievements.”

The facility also showcases our commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation. The Twin Rinks is heated and cooled through an advanced geothermal energy system, making it one of the first recreation facilities of its kind in Canada to utilize this technology. The arena also incorporates a carbon dioxide-based ice plant, replacing traditional ammonia systems with a safer and more energy-efficient alternative. An innovative ice-water recycling system further reduces water consumption by reclaiming and reusing water generated through ice maintenance.

The Twin Rinks is expected to welcome up to 50,000 visitors annually, creating significant opportunities for community engagement and regional economic activity. The facility is designed to function not only as a community asset but also as a destination venue that attracts visitors from across southern Alberta through tournaments, camps, leagues, and special events.

Key objectives for the facility include:

-Expanding access to recreation and physical activity

-Supporting youth development and community wellbeing

-Providing affordable and accessible programming for Kainai Nation members

-Establishing a sustainable operational model that balances financial performance with community impact

As operations commence, the Blood Tribe is actively pursuing sponsorship, naming rights, advertising, and partnership opportunities with businesses and organizations that wish to support community recreation and youth development while increasing their visibility within the region.
