Recycling carts introduced in six Lethbridge County communities

Residents in six Lethbridge County communities recently received a curbside recycling cart from the City of Lethbridge. 

Carts arrived in Fairview, Mountain Meadows, and Monarch on Wednesday, September 16, and in Deer Run, Diamond City, and Shaughnessy on Monday, September 21. Crews worked through each community and left carts at the front of the property. Each cart arrived with a recycling guide, a collection schedule postcard, and a latch for windy days.

City of Lethbridge staff were on site to answer questions about curbside recycling:

The first collection is Monday, October 5, and recycling is collected every two weeks on Mondays. Monarch is collected on Tuesdays, so its first collection is Tuesday, October 6. Residents put their cart at the curb in front of the house, the same as they do with garbage. Residents can download the Lethbridge Loop app after Thursday, October 1 for collection schedules and the full list of accepted materials.

Garbage collection will not change and stays weekly on Thursdays.

The curbside recycling program is part of Alberta’s new Extended Producer Responsibility program and covers residential recycling. It’s funded by the producers of single-use paper, plastics, and packaging, so it is not taxpayer funded and there is no user fee.

Residents in the six participating communities received a letter last month letting them know curbside recycling was coming. The County has also posted updates on our website, Facebook, Instagram, and in the County Insider e-newsletter.

Lethbridge County is not the program administrator or service provider. The County is sharing this information so residents know what to expect from this new service.
