The speed limit along a portion of Highway 3 through the Town of Coaldale is increasing to 60 km/h.
The work follows a recent provincial review that identified the need for greater consistency and improved safety along the busy corridor.
As a result of the review, Highway 3 through Coaldale is now a consistent 60 km/h zone, with 70 km/h transition areas on both the east and west approaches to town. These changes are now officially in effect.
“Highway 3 is one of the most heavily travelled routes in southern Alberta, and ensuring the safety of our residents and visitors is essential,” said Coaldale Mayor Jack Van Rijn. “Moving to a consistent 60 km/h speed zone through Coaldale creates a more predictable driving environment and reduces the risks associated with fluctuating speeds. I encourage all motorists to respect the new limits and help keep our community safe.”
The town notified residents of the speed limit changes, via a public notice on social media last week, and advised them that Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors has completed the installation of updated speed limit signs along Highway 3, as of Friday (Dec. 5).
Coaldale and area residents who commented on the public notice posted to the town’s social media last week had mixed reviews about the increased speed limit. Some said it was good to see the increase, while others thought it was a waste of money, as drivers will continue to speed through town along Highway 3.
