The Town of Picture Butte continues to prepare to celebrate its Centennial in 2026, with town councillors finalizing its Centennial banners during the Jan. 12, Town of Picture Butte regular council meeting.

Councillors viewed and discussed several banners for the town’s Centennial, which detailed historical dates and noteworthy events over the past century.

The banners also included a “100 Years In the Making” title and a final banner that included the Picture Butte, Alberta Centennial logo and a statement that read “Celebrating 100 Years of Community 1926-2026.”

Some of the noteworthy events included in the banners were ‘The First School Building Opens in Picture Butte’ (1927), ‘Picture Butte Becomes a Village’ (1943) and ‘The Picture Butte Hospital Opens’ (1960), among several others. Of the 12 banners provided to council, only nine were required.

Councillors shared feedback on the Centennial banners, stating they thought the banners were well done and administration did a good job in creating them and sharing important historical dates. Councillors discussed which of the nine banners should be kept.

In their discussions, they inquired about the use of some of the wording in one or two of the banners, including such words as arrival instead of using the word established.

Administration informed council that wording for the banners was based on language used in the Coyote Flats history book, so people looking up the event(s) would have matching words to reference.

“The Lethbridge Northern Irrigation District was in the area, but it came or arrived in Picture Butte at this time,” said Picture Butte CAO Keith Davis.

Council discussed removing several banners, which administration confirmed and said the next step would be to order them, print them and put the Centennial banners up around town.
