The Coaldale Copperheads gave out some treats and had an opponent play a few tricks in a weekend split.
It all started with a 4-3 loss to Strathmore on Halloween, as a tricky second period spooked the Copperheads on the road.
Strathmore led 1-0 after 20 minutes and poured it on in the middle frame, as the home side skated to a 4-0 lead.
Trey Schofield made it 4-1 with a shorthanded goal with only six seconds left, assisted by Brinley Degenstein.
Brett Hudley cut the lead to 4-2, as he scored an unassisted goal early in the third. A Ryan Holm goal, assisted by Nathan Verloop, gave the Copperheads a fighting chance, as Coaldale’s powerplay marker put the pressure on the home side.
In the end, that was as close as the Copperheads would get, as Strathmore survived to escape with a one-goal victory.
Bylin Noble made 20 saves in goal for Coaldale, as the Copperheads went one for four with the man advantage. The visitors killed off all five Wheatland Kings powerplays.
On Saturday, the Copperheads treated the home fans to a strong defensive effort in a 2-1 win over Okotoks.
Holm opened the scoring in the first with a goal assisted by Degenstein and Lucas Alexander.
Cohen Richardson made it 2-0 on a goal set up by Verloop, as that was all the offence Coaldale needed.
Noble allowed one second-period goal and made 24 saves to secure the win, as the Copperheads held a 32-25 edge on the shotclock.
This weekend, Coaldale will travel to Okotoks on Friday and will host Medicine Hat on Saturday in an 8 p.m. contest.
The Copperheads will skate into the weekend still in first place in the South Division with a 9-4-1 record, good for 19 points in the standings.
