It was a championship weekend for the Coaldale Cobras U18 hockey team. After victories on Friday in Irvine and Saturday in Cremona, it all came down to a Sunday showdown against the Sylvan Lake Lakers, with the Central Alberta Hockey League Tier 3 title on the line.

Coaldale led 2-1 after 20, extended the lead to 5-1 after two periods and cruised home from there with a 7-1 win to earn the Tier 3 banner after a perfect 3-0 weekend. Ryley Kauenhowen got Coaldale on the board early in the first, with a goal assisted by Janah Hass and Kaede Wakefield. Hass scored a goal of his own to make it 2-0, as Wakefield and Lane Broderson drew assists.

In the second, Broderson scored Coaldale’s third goal, assisted by Hudson Adams and Carson Roy. Hass scored twice in the second, as Wakefield and Broderson assisted on his first goal, and Kauenhowen and Marco Burnett drew helpers on the second.

In the third, Brayden Zasadny put the Cobras up 6-1 on a goal assisted by Broderson. Late in the final frame, Broderson made it 7-1.

Friday featured a 5-2 over Irvine, where Coaldale needed a big third period to pull away.

It was 1-1 after the first, as Irvine scored first and Hess knotted things up for the Cobras, as Caleb Klassen and Burnett drew the assists. Irvine scored the only goal of the middle frame, which opened the door for Lane Broderson’s heroics in the third.

First, Broderson tied things up with an unassisted marker. Then Hess scored his second of the contest, assisted by Burnett and Beckham Sugai. Two unassisted Broderson goals, with 2:48 left and 40 seconds left, sealed the deal. Colton Peters made 30 saves in goal for the Cobras.

Saturday, Coaldale pulled out a 4-3 win over Cremona, as once again, a comeback was in order. The Cobras trailed 2-0 after 20, as the team rallied for three goals in the second. Kade Van Buuren got the ball rolling with a marker assisted by Hass and Hudson Adams. Sugai’s unassisted goal tied things up before Burnett capitalized on the powerplay to make it 3-2. Klassen and Sugai drew the helpers. Cremon tied things up late in the third, with only 2:13 left on the clock but only 26 seconds later, Broderson’s unassisted tally gave the Cobras the victory. Cashton Carriere made 42 saves to lead Coaldale to the win.

Now, with the CAHL crown in hand, the team will prepare for provincials, March 26-29, as the Coaldale Sportsplex will play host to the eight-team tournament.

Coaldale will play at 7 p.m. on March 26, at 1:45 p.m. on March 27 and at 2 p.m. on March 28.
