Town of Coaldale councillor Bill Chapman announces re-election bid

Town of Coaldale Councillor Bill Chapman has officially announced his intent to seek re-election in the upcoming municipal election on October 20.

“I am honoured to once again put my name forward for Coaldale town council. Together with my colleagues, we’ve made great progress, and I’m committed to continuing that momentum into the next term,” said Chapman. 

Over the past four years, council has delivered on major priorities from its Strategic Plan. This includes key infrastructure projects like Civic Square, the SHIFT Community Recreation Centre, and ongoing work toward the completion of Prairie Winds Secondary School.

Chapman praised the strong working relationship between council and administration, and the unified vision under the leadership of Mayor Jack Van Rijn.

Key Accomplishments:

– Policing & Bylaw: Coaldale now receives $550,000 annually from the Province to offset RCMP costs. A pilot project was launched to allow golf carts on designated streets to improve community access.

– Economic Growth: The $222 million NewCold facility, Coaldale’s largest investment to date, was completed in 2025, bringing 50 permanent jobs and major regional economic potential.

– Recreation & Events: Council rebranded and expanded Summer Fest, hosted the Southern Alberta Summer Games for the first time in 30 years, and delivered major upgrades to the community pool and Civic Plaza.

– Fiscal Responsibility: Coaldale earned the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting for four consecutive years. Despite financial pressures, the Town has maintained among the lowest tax increases in the region.

– Infrastructure & Growth: Council has prioritized long-term utility projects like the $13.2 million potable water reservoir, addressed flood mitigation through the Malloy Drain project, and supported street and alley upgrades.

– Regional Advocacy: Chapman has led efforts as President of the Highway 3 Twinning Development Association, helping secure construction of the next 46 km stretch from Taber to Burdett.

“My vision is simple – to make Coaldale a place where residents of all ages can live, work, and thrive without needing to leave,” said Chapman. “That includes advocating for seniors housing, planning for growth, and revitalizing key areas of our community.”

Chapman emphasized the importance of collaboration with partners like Palliser School Division, Lethbridge County, and St. Mary River Irrigation District, crediting strong relationships as key to Coaldale’s success.

“I believe in the leadership of our mayor, in the strength of our team, and most of all, in the people of Coaldale. I respectfully ask for your support this fall as we continue to build a vibrant, sustainable future together.”
