Coaldale residents will do their part to help end childhood cancer, when they lace up their shoes for the town’s first Golden Strides Walk – Steps to End Childhood Cancer, this Saturday, Sept. 20.

The 3 kilometre walk begins at 10 a.m. at the Shift Community Recreation Centre and is presented by the Kinsmen Club of Coaldale.

The family-friendly event aims to bring hope, raise awareness and funds for children and families impacted by childhood cancer. All proceeds from the walk will support childhood cancer research through the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation.

“Our mission is to end pediatric cancer and empower families every step of the way,” said Tristin Mercer, co-founder of Kinley’s Quest Foundation. “Golden Strides is our community’s chance to step up, stand together, and make a difference.”

Golden Strides Walk is being organized by Kinley’s Quest Foundation, a local charitable organization established in January 2025 after the Mercer family lost their daughter Kinley, to pediatric cancer at just seven months of age. Inspired by Kinley’s journey and dedicated to ending pediatric cancer, the foundation honours her memory and works to raise awareness, fund research, and support families at every stage of their journey.

“Rooted in compassion and driven by purpose, this walk creates space for remembrance, resilience, and rallying for change,” said Town of Coaldale Mayor Jack Van Rijn. “It is also a celebration of unity, bringing people together for a day of connection, encouragement, and support. Whether you choose to walk, cheer from the sidelines, or volunteer your time, there is a place for everyone to make a difference.”

Van Rijn said he will be participating in the event and encourages residents to come out and join, whether they walk in honour of someone, in memory, or in support of a future free from childhood cancer.

“Every step raises awareness, funds critical research, and supports families navigating the unimaginable,” said Van Rijn, praising the Kinsmen Club of Coaldale for stepping forward as the title sponsor for the event.

“Most importantly, we send our love and support to all the families who have lost a loved one to pediatric cancer,” said Van Rijn. “Your strength and courage continue to inspire us, and it is in your honour that we walk, remember, and strive for a future where no child or family has to face this battle.”

Participants can register for the event, prior to Sept. 20 or on the day of, starting at 9 a.m. at the Shift Community Recreation Centre in Coaldale.
