The Town of Picture Butte is preparing to hold a by-election this spring, following the resignation of Councillor Crystal Neels last month.

In a media release dated Feb. 10, the Town of Picture Butte acknowledged and accepted Neels official resignation.

“The Town of Picture Butte Council advises that Coun. Crystal Neels has formally resigned from her position as Councillor for Picture Butte, effective Feb. 9, 2026,” read the release. “Council wishes to acknowledge and thank Coun. Neels for her commitment and contribution to the Picture Butte community. During her time on council, she worked to represent the interests of residents and support positive outcomes for the municipality,” the release continued. “Council extends its sincere appreciation to Coun. Neels for her service and wishes her all the very best in her future endeavours.”

In a follow-up media release on Feb. 24, the town announced a by-election to fill the vacant council seat, and provided details about the by-election process.

During the Feb. 23 Town of Picture Butte regular council meeting, councillors discussed the council vacancy and set a date for a spring by-election, via a council resolution, that will be held on May 20, 2026.

The nomination period runs from Feb. 24 until 12 p.m. noon on April 22, 2026. Candidate packages can be picked up at the town office, located at 120 4th Street N during office hours or can be printed from the town website.
