Coaldale CAO Kalen Hastings recognized with the 2025 Dedicated Chief Administrative Officer Award

Town of Coaldale CAO Kalen Hastings was recently recognized by members of town council after receiving a prestigious award from Alberta Municipalities. 

Coaldale Town Council honoured Hastings prior to the Town of Coaldale Feb. 2 regular council meeting.  

Hastings was named the recipient of the 2025 Dedicated Chief Administrative Officer Award, presented by Alberta Municipalities and the Society of Local Government Managers. The award celebrates long-serving CAOs who demonstrate outstanding leadership, integrity, and commitment to municipal governance.

“I would like to take a moment, on behalf of council, administration and the entire Town of Coaldale to recognize and congratulate our Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Kalen Hastings on receiving a truly, well-deserved honour,” said Coaldale Mayor Jack Van Rijn. “This recognition is not simply about the years of service, it reflects the impact of that service. Kalen’s leadership is felt across every part of our organization. He has built a strong and stable administrative team and he has earned deep respect from staff through collaboration, clear communication, and a genuine commitment to professional growth,” he added. 

Van Rijn also noted how Hastings earned the trust of council through “steady, evidence-based advice and consistent focus on transparency and accountability.” He spoke of how Hastings leadership helps ensure council’s priorities are carried forward with clarity and professionalism. 

“Under Kalen’s direction, Coaldale has experienced one of the most ambitious periods of growth and capital development in our history,” said Van Rijn. “From major infrastructure investments to recreation facilities, downtown revitalization, and long-term planning that continues to position our community for success,” he added. 

Van Rijn noted what stands out most about Hastings, including his integrity and his ability to lead quietly and effectively, adding that Hastings empowers others, supports staff and always keeps the community at the centre of the work.  

“Kalen, this award reflects what we already know in Coaldale – that your dedication, professionalism and steady leadership have made a lasting difference in this municipality,” said Van Rijn. “Congratulations and thank you for everything you do for our town.”
