The annual Coaldale Family Fun Run is almost here.

For 15 years, the event has been a springtime tradition for the Coaldale community and has welcomed families, visitors and residents of all ages. This year, the annual event, presented by Coaldale Christian School, takes place April 18 at 10 a.m.

Coaldale and area residents can still register for the event with final registration cut-off dates for paper registration this Wednesday, April 15 and for online registration, Thursday, April 16. Runners can pick up their race package on Friday, April 17, at Coaldale Christian School between 12 – 6 p.m.

“Planning is going really well. We’re already at 407 entries, so considering there’s still two weeks to go, our numbers are looking really, really good for this year and we’re really excited to have seen that many entries already,” said Emma de Boer, event coordinator for the Coaldale Family Fun Run. “I’m excited for hopefully a really good turnout on the Saturday (April 18).”

She noted that while it’s the first time that she and her husband have stepped up to organize the event, both of them are long-time participants of the Coaldale Family Fun Run and wanted to help to ensure the events continued success.

The family fun run is an annual fundraiser, with both a portion of entry fees and event proceeds from the event going to support local organizations and projects every year, noted de Boer.

“Every year we choose a different charity, so this year $2 from every entry goes towards Rehoboth Christians ministries and for the last number of years we’ve been switching between the food bank and Rehoboth,” said de Boer. “Then also, we have proceeds going towards the SHIFT Recreation Centre for the new baseball cages and equipment, so we have money pledged to them for that. Then we’re also supporting Project Playground (Coaldale) East, specifically for a soccer net and picnic table,” she added, noting that they don’t have a timeline for that yet but hope to see some forward movements with that project in the near future.

With hundreds of participants in the event every year, de Boer noted the importance of the Coaldale Family Fun Run, whose goal in part is to encourage healthy, outdoor activity, enhance family time and bring families and people in the community together.

“I think it’s so important – beyond the fundraising, beyond the charities – that’s great and obviously a main goal, but just to get everybody out together, doing something outside that’s healthy with your family, with your friends and with your town residents,” said de Boer. “I think it’s just really important to bring everybody together and have that sense of community brought back, especially in a world (with) lots of negativity and noise. It’s just good to get together and do good and fun things.”

Participants can drop off completed registration forms at Coaldale Christian School or at Runners Soul in Lethbridge. To enter online visit racepro.ca/coaldale
