We approached Fr. Eugene Raimbault and asked if he would marry us in the Holy Family Church in St. Boniface, Man. on May 17, 1976. He replied, “why me?” striking his forehead with his palm. After his approval we began to run around Winnipeg to get ready for the big event. The weekend before our wedding it rained heavily but that didn’t stop us. We stayed at St. Regis Hotel that was recently demolished after 110 years of operation.
Our wedding took place on a Monday at 6 p.m. and the sun shone brightly, which was a blessing. We had Mick & Doris witness our marriage. After the ceremony we headed to King Richard and the Round Table Restaurant. All the waiters wore the period costume akin to Robin Hood with leather boots up to their knees. Our friends went back to their home while we stayed at St. Regis for another night. We headed for Niagara Falls early the next morning and stopped in Toronto, Burlington and Hamilton to visit our siblings on the way there.
We went back to Winnipeg after our visit to Ontario and drove back to Lynn Lake on the roughest highway that we ever drove on. We rented a house on Sherridan Avenue and remained in Lynn Lake for five years. My chief engineer from Uranium City, Sask., asked me to work for him. We worked there for five years and when the ore ran out, we moved to Taber, Alta., and then on to Coaldale where we’ve lived for over 40 years since.
Paul Jones, Coaldale
