A Lethbridge County resident is asking the County and the City of Lethbridge to work together to address increasing traffic demands along 43rd Street North.

Shari Rogerson is encouraging Lethbridge County and the City of Lethbridge councils to “explore collaborative planning and cost-sharing opportunities,” regarding a stretch of road that borders the County and City.

Lethbridge County councillors heard about Rogerson’s concerns in a letter she wrote to council that was discussed at the June 18 Lethbridge County regular council meeting.

“I am writing to express concern regarding the increasing traffic demands along 43rd Street North and to encourage Lethbridge County to work collaboratively with the City of Lethbridge to prioritize roadway expansion and infrastructure improvements within this rapidly developing corridor,” Rogerson said in her letter.

She asked they consider the situation  “before current concerns become larger infrastructure challenges.”

Rogerson said that as development continues to accelerate on both the County and City sides of 43rd Street North, the roadway has become an increasingly important transportation connection for residents, businesses, industrial activity, and agricultural and commercial transport moving between the County and the City of Lethbridge.

She also pointed out some of the reasons behind the increased traffic volumes in the area, which include residential development, increased commuter traffic, industrial, agricultural, and commercial transportation, construction-related traffic, school bus and family transportation needs, and ongoing movement between municipal boundaries.

“Given the continued pace of growth, I believe proactive infrastructure investment and regional transportation planning are essential to ensure safety, efficiency, and long-term sustainability for the area,” she said.

Lethbridge County Reeve Tory Campbell read a portion of the letter to council at the June 18 meeting and provided some feedback, pointing out that Rogerson also sent the same letter to the City of Lethbridge Mayor and Council.

“This area is a part of the IDP that we have with the City and this area, as Ms. Rogerson noted, is an area of rapid development right now … it’s exciting but it also comes with some challenges around traffic,” said Campbell, noting different responsibilities for each municipality and pointed to the off-site levies that the City of Lethbridge would levy in supporting their infrastructure.

Trevor Lewington, director of growth and engagement for Lethbridge County, provided some comments regarding the letter, and noted a levy that is specifically designated for upgrades to 43rd Street.

“Properties that develop on the County side are required to contribute to that – there is a reserve that the County maintains for future upgrades to 43rd Street,” said Lewington. “My suggestion is that we could draft a response to Ms. Rogerson on your behalf that outlines the process. It is something that we can add to the planned IDP inter-municipal committee meeting in July, with the City of Lethbridge and make sure that’s added to the agenda.”
