Coaldale Spartans welcome teams for inaugural Peewee Jamboree

Minor football players from across the region hit the field Saturday, for the first ever Coaldale Spartans Peewee Jamboree at the John Davidson School field. 

Peewee teams from Taber, Lethbridge, Claresholm, Pincher Creek, Cardston Magrath and Coaldale, participated in the inaugural event on Sept. 12. 

“We’ve got eight local teams participating today. We’re going to follow the Jamboree with a Bantam game versus Claresholm and a High School game versus Claresholm,” said Jaime Metzger, president of the Coaldale Spartans Football Club. “The turnout’s been fantastic and we’re really happy. The kids are having a great time.”

Metzger said the Jamboree helps raise awareness about minor football in the community and provides and opportunity for Coaldale kids and parents  to learn more about the sport and the Coaldale Spartans. 

The day-long football Jamboree also featured food trucks, activities, sideline games, and a 50/50 draw. 

This year, there are a total of 12 Peewee teams in the (Southern Alberta Football) league, noted Metzger, and eight of those teams participated in the Jamboree on Saturday.  

“It’s been a great success …we’re getting through a few bumps but we’re learning a lot and I think if we do this again, it’ll be that much easier next time,” said Metzger, adding the Jamboree games do not count towards regular season standings and wining teams were awarded some small prizes. 

“It gives the kids another chance to develop their skills and to have fun together,” said Metzger. 

While this is the Coaldale Spartans first time hosting a Jamboree, football clubs across the region have held them in previous years. This year, the Spartans felt they had the resources, including parental support and board support, to host a successful event. 

“Our head coach (Terry Allen) has wanted to have a Jamboree for a long time and we finally felt this year we had a good size board and we felt like this was a good time to give it a try,” said Metzger. “I hope we can continue to do this. It really is great to see everyone come out.”
