Southern Alberta students have an opportunity to learn about and discover the possibilities for future careers in health care.
The Southern Alberta Collegiate Institute (SACI) is hosting Careers in Care, an interactive health-care career discovery day for Grade 7–9 students, on Wednesday, Oct. 21.
Students from five Southern Alberta school divisions—Lethbridge, Palliser, Holy Spirit, Horizon and Westwind—will come together for the day to explore a wide variety of careers available within the health care field.
The event will run from 9:00 a.m.–2:30 p.m. at SACI on the Lethbridge Polytechnic campus.
Careers in Care is designed to be very different from a traditional career fair. Rather than moving past information booths, students will rotate in small groups through career experiences led by health-care professionals. The emphasis is on hands-on learning. Students will have opportunities to try skills, explore equipment, participate in demonstrations and challenges, and talk directly with people working in a variety of health-care careers.
One main goal of the event, is to introduce students to careers they may not be familiar with and help them understand what those careers entail. At this age, many students can name a doctor, nurse or paramedic, but their understanding of the many people and professions involved in patient care is often more limited.
About 65 students from the five participating school divisions, are expected to participate, along with health-care professionals representing a variety of career areas.
