Canadian singer/ songwriter Sarah Beatty is making her Coaldale debut as part of the Home Routes/Chemin Chez Nous concert series.
The Coaldale concert on Oct. 19 is the fourth of 10 stops for Beatty across southern Alberta and southeast British Columbia this month, as the 2025-2026 Home Routes season gets underway this fall.
The Home Routes/Chemin Chez Nous concert series tours across five Canadian provinces and provides an opportunity for area residents to enjoy a variety of music genres including folk, blues, jazz, country and world music.
This year, the non-profit organization is celebrating its 18th season.
Beatty is a roots performer who sings, plays guitar and whose music is a combination of folk, blues and jazz. She has an acclaimed album, Bandit Queen, that has topped Canada’s Roots charts.
“Some of the songs that I do are more sort of funky, some of the songs that I do are a little bit more like what your standard country (music) would sound like, and just being able to move around those different styles is where I find a lot of enjoyment,” said Beatty.
Leonard Podolak, Home Routes/Chemin Chez Nous co-artistic executive director, said they are excited to have a musician like Sarah Beatty join them on the concert series tour this season.
“We’re thrilled to launch the series with the incredible Sarah Beatty — an engaging and dynamic singer-songwriter whose performances take audiences on a journey of experiences and emotions,” said Podolak, noting the season kicks off in September, with tours running through November, February, March, and April. “We’re confident that everyone who comes out will be patting themselves on the back for discovering an artist they’ll never forget.”
Beatty noted how special it is to be a part of the tour and shared her excitement about performing in her first Home Routes concert series.
“What Home Routes has done and is doing in Canada is so unique,” said Beatty. “It is such a distinct thing that Canada has – that integrated house concert network … it’s really wonderful to have all that support as an artist,” she added. “To have an organization like this to help facilitate those connections is huge. It’s huge for audiences, it’s huge for musicians and I think it helps strengthen the fabric of what (we do).”
Home Routes/Chemin Chez Nous was founded in 2007 and is a Winnipeg-based non-profit organization initiated by the founders of the Winnipeg Folk Festival and the West End Cultural Centre, Mitch Podolak and Ava Kobrinsky, alongside Tim Osmond with a start-up grant from Canada Council For The Arts. Today, they continue connecting artists and communities across the country in small, intimate settings and venues that range from 12 to 100 people.
Beatty said she is looking forward to meeting people and sharing her music with residents at her concert in Coaldale on Oct. 19.
“Songs are such a simple and yet vast technology that can just hold and communicate so much,”said Beatty. “They’re not just background noise, but can really help mediate us through really difficult, big things with so much grace and solidity.”
