Potential Canada Post strike could impact mail subscriptions

Posted on May 22, 2025 by Sunny South News

Canada Post employees may be headed back to the picket line this week as an extension of the existing agreement between the postal carrier and the union is set to expire on May 22.

Mail delivery of your subscription may be affected if the Canadian Union of Postal Workers initiate another strike, and we understand that last year’s strike was difficult for many of our readers.

Another strike or lockout would mark the second time in less than six months where postal employees have initiated labour action; 55,000 walked off the job for 32 days in Nov. – Dec. 2024.

The two sides agreed to come back to the table last month for negotiations, supported by a mediator, but so far there has been little word about how close they might be to hammering out an agreement, leaving potential strike action a very real possibility following May 22.

“We’re still optimistic Canada Post and its union will come to an agreement before May 22, but the reality is another strike may be in the cards for the mail carrier,” said Trevor Busch, managing editor of the Alberta Communities Group, a division of Southern Alberta Newspapers. “But if that occurs, we will do what we can to make any interim transition as smooth and seamless as possible for our valued readers and subscribers.”

Southern Alberta Newspapers, which includes two dailies and eight weekly publications spanning two provinces, continues to make every effort to insulate our readers from the negative impacts of mail disruptions by providing a wide variety of other options to access your subscription.
