The Town of Picture Butte is ready to welcome residents and visitors for a fun-filled summer celebration this weekend.
People can enjoy a range of activities and events during the town’s annual Jamboree Days, August 15-17. Also taking place this weekend at Coyote Flats Poineer Village, is their annual Harvest Days on August 16-17.
“It brings the town together and it brings people in (to town), so it drives a lot of community spirit,” said Cathy Moore, Mayor of Picture Butte. “It’s a great family gathering.”
The weekend fun kicks off on Friday evening with a street dance and concession from 7 – 9 p.m. at the outdoor arena at Lions Park, followed by fireworks at 10 p.m. at the Picture Butte Reservoir.
“Everybody loves to come out and dance and have a great time,” she said. “The fireworks brings out everybody and we always put on a great display.”
Saturday’s events start early with a pancake breakfast at the Picture Butte Arena from 7-10 a.m. while the Ag Society Country Market also takes place at the arena from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. The annual parade hits the streets at 11 a.m., followed by Kids Day in the Park from 12 – 3 p.m. with activities and a free hot dog lunch and the Ag Society Beer Gardens and Food Trucks at the Elks Hall will be open from 12 – 8 p.m.
People can donate a toonie or a non-perishable food item for the public swim at the Aquatic Centre from 1 – 4 p.m. with all donations going to the Picture Butte food bank. Later that afternoon at the arena’s front entrance, there will be a display unveiling by members of the beet industry, around 4:15-4:30 p.m. and one of the highlights of the weekend will include the town’s first time capsule opening at 4:30 p.m., followed by a town barbecue.
“I think it’s going to be very exciting,” said Moore, noting once the capsule is opened and items taken out, they will be on display for residents and the public to view over the next year at various locations, yet to be determined.
“Then next year, at our 100th anniversary celebration we will put another capsule in beside the first one and re-seal it. Then 25 years (later) there will be another celebration to open it again and see what the 50-year time capsule has to offer and keep doing that (every 25 years),” she said.
Curtis Van Dorp, Director of Parks and Recreation for the Town of Picture Butte has been busy finalizing details of the three-day summer celebration and noted a new addition for Jamboree Days this year.
“New this year on Saturday from 12 p.m to 8 p.m. the Ag Society is putting on a beer gardens with food trucks at the Elks Hall,” said Van Dorp, noting the fireworks, pancake breakfast and the parade are “big hits” with everyone. “(It’s a great event) thanks to the great work the Ag Society does, and the chamber, the churches and the rec committee putting this all together.”
In the early afternoon, residents and visitors can head on over to Coyote Flats for their annual Harvest Days – a two day event Saturday and Sunday, starting at 1 p.m. both days, featuring harvest demonstrations, horse pulls, dog agility events and displays of antique machinery.
Saturday finishes with a Movie in the Park scheduled for 9 p.m. at the Lions Park. There is also a baseball tournament taking place all weekend at the Picture Butte Baseball Diamonds and on Sunday, there will be a non-denominational church service at 11 a.m. at Lions Park to wrap up the weekend’s events.
“It’s a fun-filled weekend for everybody,” said Moore.
