The Town of Coaldale is joining communities across Canada this week, as they mourn with Tumbler Ridge, B.C., following the mass shooting on Feb. 11, that took nine lives and injured more than 25 people.

Town of Coaldale Mayor Jack Van Rijn, shared a few words on social media and expressed his and the town’s sorrow over the tragedy.

“On behalf of our Town of Coaldale Council and our entire community, we extend our deepest condolences to the residents of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, following the tragic and senseless act of violence that has claimed so many lives,” said Van Rijn. “We are profoundly saddened by this devastating loss. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, friends, first responders, and all those whose lives have been forever impacted. In moments such as this, the pain is felt far beyond municipal boundaries, resonating in communities across the country, including here in Coaldale.”

He noted as a “gesture of respect and remembrance,” flags at Town of Coaldale municipal facilities will be lowered to half-mast for one week, in honour of the victims and in solidarity with the community of Tumbler Ridge during this time of mourning.

“We stand with the people of Tumbler Ridge as they grieve, support one another, and begin the long process of healing,” said Van Rijn. “May they find strength in their community, comfort in one another, and reassurance in knowing that communities like ours are holding them close in thought and prayer during this incredibly difficult time.”
