The Town of Coalhurst has provided a notice of intent to annex from Lethbridge County that was before councillors at Lethbridge County’s Sept. 4 regular council meeting.

While there was no discussion on the notice amongst councillors or staff at the council meeting, Lethbridge County Reeve Tory Campbell did provide comment and noted the process involved in annexation.

“As the Town of Coalhurst’s Notice of Intent to Annex is an initial step in the process, there are additional conversations to be had, as required by the Municipal Government Act,” said Campbell. “The County looks forward to further discussions and review with the town through our Intermunicipal Development Plan committee.”

The move towards annexing lands will help the Town of Coalhurst prepare for future growth.

“The Town of Coalhurst is taking steps to secure the land needed for future non-residential growth,” said Karlene Betteridge, Chief Administrative Officer. “This annexation is consistent with the Intermunicipal Development Plan we share with Lethbridge County. It will allow us to better service existing businesses and prepare for new development in this area.”

Betteridge said the town is committed to working with landowners, Lethbridge County, and the public throughout this process to ensure it is transparent and collaborative.

“We enjoy working with Lethbridge County and are looking forward to supporting development and growth for the region,” said Town of Coalhurst Mayor Lyndsay Montina.
