As Canadians gather to remember the service and sacrifice of thousands of Canadian veterans on Remembrance Day, municipalities across the region will join them, holding ceremonies on Nov. 11.

The Town of Picture Butte will be holding a Remembrance Day Service Nov. 11, starting at 9:45 a.m. at the Elks Hall. The event will include a congregation in the hall, laying of the wreaths, the playing of Last Post and Reveille and a time of fellowship following the service at the Elks Hall.

The Coalhurst Legion 273 is hosting its annual Remembrance Day Ceremony at the Coalhurst Community Centre Nov. 11, starting at 10:30 a.m. with a reception at the Legion following the ceremony.

The Town of Nobleford will host a Remembrance Day Ceremony at the Communmity Complex at 10:30 a.m. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

Town of Nobleford CAO Steven Leusink shared some history of Remembrance Day in his Noble News monthly message.

“Armistice Day or ‘Remembrance Day’ as it has come to be known, originated following the end of the First World War. The Armistice agreement was signed between Germany and the Allied Forces in Paris on Monday, November 11, 1918 at 0500 hours,” said Leusink. “The ceasefire went into effect at 1100 hours the same morning – the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. The first Armistice Day was observed in 1919.”

The Town of Coaldale will hold an in-person Remembrance Day Ceremony Nov. 11 at 10:30 a.m. at Jennie Emery Elementary School (at 1101 22nd Ave). Similar to previous years, the ceremony will also be live-streamed via the town’s YouTube channel for those who cannot attend in person.

The ceremony is a long-standing tradition in the Town of Coaldale, said Clayton Varjassy, Community Experience Manager with the town.

“Our Remembrance Day Committee works each fall with community groups, schools, and veterans’ representatives to bring the community together in a meaningful moment of reflection and gratitude,” said Varjassy, noting the ceremony honours and remembers veterans and those who served, and serves as a public gathering for the community to reflect on the sacrifices made in defence of our freedoms.

The Town is home to the Coaldale Cenotaph that was dedicated in November 1999 in memory of those who served in WWI, WWII, the Korean War, the Afghanistan War and UN peace-keeping missions. The plaque on the Cenotaph was updated in 2024 to include the Afghanistan and Korean wars.

More information, including an order of service and brochure, will be available, prior to Remembrance Day at http://www.coaldale.ca/remembrance-day-2025
