Police are investigating after a multi-vehicle collision Tuesday evening, that took the life of a 22-year-old Coaldale man.
Just after 5 p.m. on Nov. 18, Brooks RCMP, EMS and fire departments from Scandia and Rolling Hills, were called to a multi-vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 36 and Highway 873, near Rainier, Alta.
Upon arrival, emergency workers discovered three vehicles, containing one occupant each, had collided at the intersection.
Early indications revealed that a white van travelling westbound failed to stop for a stop sign. The van entered the intersection at a significant rate of speed and struck the enclosed trailer of a northbound semi-truck. The trailer of the semi-truck was pushed into the oncoming lane which led to a southbound SUV colliding with the trailer.
The driver of the van, a 22-year-old Coaldale man, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the SUV, a 47-year-old female resident of the Vauxhall area, had to be extricated from her vehicle and was transported to a local hospital via ground ambulance with undetermined injuries. She was later transported to a Calgary hospital in stable condition. The driver of the semi- truck was uninjured.
Traffic was detoured around the scene for about five hours.
RCMP are continuing their investigation.
