My name is Nikki Jamieson, and I am the new reporter/editor at the Sunny South News.
I got into this industry because I loved writing, and stayed because of that adrenaline rush I get when I finish a story, put a paper to bed and getting that perfect photo.
I am still fairly new to the industry, and I come to you from the not so far away lands of Taber and Vauxhall — or 23 minutes east down the road and about another 23 minutes north. You may have even seen my byline in the Sunny South News under the Southern Alberta Newspapers banner, as there’s a story of relevant interest to the Sunny South readership area.
You might of even picked up a copy of The Taber Times or Vauxhall Advance and read my school board, town and M.D. coverage, or just shook your head when I complained about pumpkin spice.
I have lived in a few places growing up, and went to university in Halifax. I graduated in 2014 from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Management, majoring in Public Sector Business and minoring in Journalism Studies, and again in 2015 with a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of King’s College. I then headed to Calgary — where I completed a one-month internship at the Calgary Herald — and stayed there while I job hunted, eventually coming to Taber to work at the weekly newspapers there.
Just over a week ago, my publisher approached me and asked I would be interested in taking over the editor/reporter position at Sunny South. In what has got to be the fastest job move I have ever had, a few days later I had a new job and a new apartment. Thankfully my new co-workers are patient with me as I run around calling movers while juggling my new responsibilities and finding out where the memory card reader is.
When I’m not working, I enjoy watching movies, reading and dancing to my favourite music. Despite it’s disappointing ending a few years ago, my favourite tv show is CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and have enjoyed all it’s spin-offs with the exception of it’s Miami counterpart (that is a whole separate rant all together, but it’s an unneeded one as that show is cancelled and we never have to be subjected to it’s horrors again).
I am also an avid graphic novel/comic book reader, and am current into Harley Quinn, Angel Catbird and Wayward
I have a cat, and I may or may not subject you readers to stories about her antics. That is not to say that I don’t like dogs; I love the little — and not-so-little — waggy-tail balls of joys, so don’t worry about your puppers around me.
I’m still finding my around places, so I ask for patience in the mean time. I will also warn that I am horrible with directions, so if I ask you repeatedly where something is, that’s why.
And if you have a story idea or tip, please give me a call at 403-345-3081, or email me at ssnews@shawbiz.ca.
Until next time, happy reading!
