Professor Robert McDonald, neuroscientist from the University of Lethbridge, is against switching to daylight saving time year-round.
I agree with his comments. When I worked as a shift engineer for Eldorado Nuclear Limited in Uranium City, Sask., my coworker and I had to work 12-hour shifts for three months without days off. One of the engineers suggested we switch from his 12-hour day shift to my 12-hour night shift, but I had to work 18 hours to switch from night to day shift. We had to work long shifts for an additional three months due to shortage of power engineers. We found long hours at work interfered with our mood because it was hard to switch from day to night when we should be sleeping at night and awake during the day. This occurred when I was in my 30’s and 40’s and didn’t have any medical problems like heart, stroke, type 2 diabetes or cancer.
The province of Saskatchewan does not change their time but remains on daylight saving time. Premier Danielle Smith should allow Albertans to take a vote on this in a referendum so that we can have our say and keep it democratic.
Paul Jones, Coaldale
