Results from a recent Coalhurst resident satisfaction survey are now available online.

The survey, which opened in January 2022 and closed on Feb. 6, concerned why residents enjoyed living in the town, what programs impacted them and how they would improve the town.

Coalhurst town council discussed the survey results during their regular Feb. 15 meeting, where they viewed a summary of the responses. A total of 133 responses were received by the town for the survey.

Mayor Lyndsay Montina asked if they could see the raw data of the survey, as she was “curious” to see the words people said in the survey. CAO Kim Hauta said it would be possible, noting what was before council was just the information compiled in a summary.

Deputy Mayor Heather Caldwell noted she loved seeing the visual impact of these surveys, although she too would like to see the raw data, and would like to see some of the comments displayed.

“These are really cool things, and they really reflect what people love (about Coalhurst),” said Caldwell. “Community, small town, those are the biggest jumpouts, right? What are people looking for? Businesses, activities, parks — those are the big jumpouts.”

Caldwell also brought up “one of the unique characteristics of this study” was the age of the respondents. According to the results, just under 50 per cent of respondents were between ages 20-39. Caldwell said that usually, they get more seniors responding to surveys — just over 15 per cent of respondents here — “so that was really cool to see”.

Common responses for the survey question ‘What do you love about Coalhurst? Why do you choose to live here?’ had to do with the quietness of the community, small-town feel, proximity to Lethbridge, and cost of living.

Responses to the question ‘What program or service currently provided by the Town has the biggest positive impact on you?’ were more varied, and included the town’s paths, greenspaces/parks, recreation activities, town staff, and snow removal.

Responses to the question ‘What are three things that you would do to improve living in Coalhurst?’ included animal control, lower speed limits, improving the Highway 3 intersection, more amenities, and business and lower taxes.
