John Davidson School in Coaldale has unveiled a new skating equipment rental program which is cultivating community and encouraging students to sharpen their skates, and skills and motivating students to stay active.

In an announcement made by Palliser School Division, principal of John Davidson school, Fred Jack explained, “The students know I have an extensive hockey background; they often ask me questions about it, and this was a nice opportunity to share that with them.”  Jack aimed to improve access to skating for students.

In collaboration with the John Davidson’s “Making Connections” liaison, Tori Norlin,  Jack and Norlin drafted and submitted a grant proposal to the Community Foundation to help fund the equipment library, and were later awarded the funds to make this vision a reality.

The announcement from Palliser School Division noted, “this library is not just a collection of gear; it’s a gateway to new experiences, learning opportunities, and the development of physical skills for students and their families alike.”

With safety and inclusive access key tenants of the initiative, the program aims to provide skates and accompanying protective gear for students of all skills and abilities. With inclusivity in mind, Norlin sourced adjustable skates as a means to accommodate a wide range of sizes and to allow for equipment to be shared with families.

According to the announcement, Jack envisioned these resources be shared beyond John Davidson School with other schools within the Palliser School Division, compounding the benefits of this equipment.

The Town of Coaldale has also invested in a seasonal outdoor skating rink at the new Civic Square building where students and families will have even more chances to refine their skills on the ice.
