The Town of Coaldale is supporting a municipal collaboration for alterative waste disposal as it seeks project funding.
During their regular Sept. 16 meeting, Coaldale town council reviewed a request for support from the Southern Alberta Energy from Waste Association (SAEWA).
SAEWA is seeking a letter of support from the town to accompany their grant applications for project-based funding stream intake with the Alberta government. The organization wants to develop an Energy from Waste (EFW) Facility in Southern Alberta, to provide an alternative method of waste disposal to traditional landfills. Their initiative aims to reduce the greenhouse gas (GHG)emissions for the province by more than seven million tonnes. According to the support letter, SEAWA is currently short-listing applications and conducting a thorough screening process as they choose a preferred proponent to develop their facility at the Newell Regional Landfill.
Coaldale has supported SAEWA since 2008, and has done so in a more formal capacity since 2012. Mayor Jack Van Rijn said he wanted to “close the loop on that” and get a motion from council to approve sending the letter.
“As a long-standing member of SAEWA, we fully support this project and their application for funding,” said Van Rijn in the support letter on behalf of the town. “We believe this initiative is crucial for advancing Alberta’s carbon reduction goals and promoting sustainable waste management practices.”
Council unanimously passed a motion to send a Letter of Support to the Southern Alberta Energy from Waste Association (SAEWA).
