Family and Community Support Services
Family and Community Support Services has a lot of offer residents of Coalhurst.
Young and old can benefit from a wide variety of services, all the way from play groups such as Stay and Play to assistance with income taxes.
Stay and Play, designed for children up to and including six years of age, runs Tuesday and Friday from 9:30-11:30 a.m.inside the Community Centre.
“Some of the benefits of Stay and Play are, Mom’s getting out of the house, meeting new families and kids getting to play together,” said Jackie Fiorino, FCSS Family Support Worker, “the parents enjoy the connection with each other”. FCSS parent coaches are also on hand to assist parents with any issues they may have with their children.
Coalhurst’s Youth Do Crew, which meets Monday’s between 3:30-5:30 p.m., also gives youth between the ages of 14-18 an opportunity to better their community through volunteerism and leadership.
“And they get to talk about their feelings and talk about what’s going on at school,” said Fiorino, on another benefit of Do Crew. “They have a safe place to go and talk amongst their peers.”
FCSS also offers a youth group the first and third Thursday of the month from 3:30-5 p.m. for youth between the ages of 7-12.
And if that’s not enough, there are also Family Night on the second Tuesday of the month, from 6-7:30 p.m. inside the Community Centre.
From November to March, FCSS also rents out the gym inside the centre for Move It, Move It, (9:30-11:30) to allow children to get a little more physical activity during the winter months.
The FCSS Volunteer Income Tax Program also assists locals in filling out basic tax returns. More information on that service can be found by calling 403-915-7063.
But in the end, FCSS is all about supporting the community, as Fiorino noted the organization can also connect people with needed supports for items such as food and housing.
