Coaldale woman recovering after dog attack

A Coaldale woman is recovering after surgery at Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge following a dog attack on Aug. 16. 

The Town of Coaldale and RCMP are now investigating the incident that left the woman with two broken arms, numerous bite marks and lacerations. 

“We are working closely with the RCMP on this file,” said Mike Numan, manager of Enforcement Services with the Town of Coaldale. 

While it is still early in the investigation, Numan noted they are “piecing everything together” and gathering details and information, including speaking to any witnesses of the attack. 

“We’re also working with Alberta Health because of the potential for infection from the dog, whether it’s rabies or other things,” he added.  

Numan did not disclose the location of the dog involved in the attack, but said it has been secured and is in quarantine. The dog has not been euthanized, as some posts on social media have indicated. 

The Town of Coaldale put out a Public Notice regarding the dog attack on Aug. 17, stating the Town is aware of the incident and has been in contact with the suspected owner of the dog.  

“The dog involved has been secured. As a result, the dog is no longer at large and there is no ongoing threat to the community,” read the statement. “The Town thanks residents for their concern. An investigation into the incident is currently underway.” 

According to a family member, the incident took place on the evening of Aug. 16 on 22 Street near 24 Avenue in Coaldale. She noted that many “kind people came to help” after the attack was over, adding they are very grateful to those who stepped up and are thanking Coaldale residents for their care and assistance given to the woman, following the attack.  

Numan said the Town has viewed screenshots and photos shared on social media and in Facebook posts, and is also part of their investigation.   

“Between the RCMP on the night of the incident, and (the Town) yesterday, (Aug. 17), we definitely secured our own video evidence and photo evidence,” said Numan, adding that as the investigation continues, the Town along with RCMP will decide what charges will be laid at a later date. 

“I know the RCMP is going to be following up with her. Obviously she is getting the health care and services she needs at the moment,” said Numan. “We will be certainly touching base with her when the time is right and it’s suitable for her.”
