The Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks women’s volleyball team is thrilled to announce its first signing for the upcoming season — Asha Hurkett.

Hurkett is a local addition to the team who played for the Panthers Volleyball Club near Coaldale. She recently graduated from Chinook High School and plans to enrol in Lethbridge Polytechnic’s Therapeutic Recreation – Gerontology program in the fall.

Kodiaks coaches have watched Hurkett play and mature as an athlete throughout the years in Lethbridge.

“She communicates well and takes feedback and instruction in a way that builds trust,” says head coach Anna Schwark. “Asha’s been attacking and serving well in the last club season, so I am looking forward to seeing more of those skills.”

Hurkett says she likes the culture coaches Schwark and Steve Ivan have built for the Kodiaks women’s volleyball team. “They’re supportive and make sure their players do well both physically and mentally.

“I wanted to go to post-secondary school in my hometown and for the last few years I have wanted to play for the Kodiaks,” she says. “I’ve played with several girls who are on the team now and I really look forward to being their teammate again.”

Hurkett says she’s attended many Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) games, and she loves the energy.

“I am looking forward to competing at a more intense level and learning from my coaches and teammates to better my own skill and development.”

The coaches have high expectations that with ACAC experience, Hurkett will become a bigger threat. The Kodiaks have consistently created some of the best middles in the league and believe she has the same potential.

“Asha’s positive attitude is exactly the kind of personality we want representing the Kodiaks for as long as possible.”

Kodiaks coaches actively recruit high school athletes around Alberta and neighbouring provinces. If one of the Kodiaks coaches hasn’t spoken to you yet, don’t worry. Simply fill out the recruitment form (gokodiaks.ca/recruitment), and they would be pleased to learn more about you.
