It was a winning weekend for the Coaldale Copperheads in Heritage Junior Hockey League play.
Friday started things off in a positive direction with a 2-1 win over the Medicine Hat Cubs.
The next day, Coaldale’s defensive dominance continued in a 4-0 victory over the High River Flyers.
The win over the Cubs came in a tight contest, as the teams skated to a scoreless first period. Bill Houenagnon got the Copperheads on the board in the second on a goal assisted by Nolan Price.
Medicine Hat tied things up as the teams skated to the locker rooms after 40 with the game tied 1-1.
Lucas Alexander played the hero in the third period, as his short-handed goal was the game winner.
When all was said and done, the Cubs held a 34-27 advantage on the shot clock. The Cubs went 0/4 on the powerplay and the Copperheads went 0/3.
Brylin Noble was in net for Coaldale and took the win.
Saturday’s game was all Coaldale, as John Vanden Elzen kicked off the scoring, as Griffin McCulloch and Kobe Fujita had assists. Fujita then scored to make it 2-0, as McCulloch drew the assist. Then it was Caden Heins who lit the lamp, on a marker assisted by Vanden Elzen and Bill Houenagnon.
Riley Potts put the game away with his second-period goal. Landon Howg and Brandon Creighton had the assists.
Joseph Rolfson made 13 saves to pick up the shutout for Coaldale.
The Copperheads fired 36 shots on goal, as the team went 1/3 on the powerplay. High River was 0/5 with the man advantage.
This week, Coaldale hosts the Rocky Rams on Saturday in an 8 p.m. contest.
On Sunday, High River will be in Coaldale for a 5 p.m. game.
