Copperheads earn two wins as preseason comes to an end

It was a successful end to the preseason for the Coaldale Copperheads.

The team picked up a pair of weekend wins over High River, which included an exciting 3-2 win on Saturday in the shootout.

Sunday featured a decisive 8-1 win on the road.

In Saturday’s game, High River’s goaltending heroics pushed the game to extra time, despite the fact Coaldale had an astounding 58-19 edge on the shot clock after three periods.

High River led 1-0 after 20 minutes, as the Copperheads could not find the net in the opening period after 21 shots on goal.

Lucas Alexander tied things up in the second before Madyx Skrypnk made it 2-1, on a goal assisted by Brett Hudey.

High River tied things up with a late powerplay goal, and the teams played to a scoreless draw in OT.

Ryan Holm and Cohen Richardson scored in the shootout, as Coaldale escaped with a win.

Brylin Noble made 17 saves in goal for the Copperheads for the win.

Sunday was the same story in terms of game flow, as Coaldale outshot High River 52-18. This time, Eric Price scored twice for Coaldale, while Hudey, Holm, Paul Vanden Elzen, Ethan Scott, Kobe Fujita and Chase Stronge all scored one goal each.

Barrett Van Nistelrooy had three helpers, while single assists were credited to Holm, Richardson, Fujita, Stronge, Drake Olineck and Landon McEwan.

Noble made 17 saves for the Copperheads in net.

Now, the team prepares for the regular season, which kicks off this weekend with two games at the Snakepit.

Coaldale will host Cochrane on Saturday in a 7 p.m. contest and will host Didsbury on Sunday. Puck drop is set for 2 p.m.
